5 Tips to Get You Started in Marketing as a New Entrepreneur

1. Define Your Target Market

The first step in marketing your business is to define your target market. Ask yourself the following detailed questions and write down the answers. Defining your target market, or what some call the ideal customer or client, will be one of the best business actions you can take. 

  • Who are you marketing to? 
  • What are their needs and wants? 
  • What do they struggle with? 
  • How do your services or products deal with their pain points? 
  • Demographics (age, location, occupation, education)?


Take note that all of the above will determine how you reach your target market and the communication tactics needed. 

2. Research Your Competition

Before marketing your business, you need to know your competition. Make a list of 3-5 competitors. Take some time to visit their website and social media platforms and analyze their content. Notice what they do well and where there is a gap that you can fill. Great companies are successful because they fill a much-needed market gap.

3. Create a Marketing Plan

Once you know who your target market is and what your competition is doing, you can create a marketing plan. This plan should include your marketing goals, strategies, budget, and content calendar. You want to create an overarching plan that allows you to develop and release your messaging. Consider the following questions and answers to be incorporated into your marketing plan:

Type of content – do you prefer blogs, infographics, podcasts, videos, e-books, or other forms of content? I would stick to no more than three outlets and focus on those in your plan for at least a year. 

Where is your audience? Determine where/how your content should be shared. 

 A plan will help you focus your marketing efforts and ensure you spend your marketing budget wisely.

Make a calendar. Wouldn’t it be nice to plan ahead to be proactive rather than reactive in your business? Or better yet, when you make a calendar with scheduled content posts, you are more likely to be consistent. So schedule some time on your personal calendar to set 3-5 hours aside for you to plan the next 3-4 months of content. Take heed to best practices and how often you should deliver content in every channel. Follow the list below for some pointers. 

  • Blogs – publish at least one blog article per week on your website. 
  • Infographics – make enough to share one infographic per month and re-share the ones that get the most engagement. 
  • Podcasts – at least once a week, but feel free to plan accordingly based on your schedule. Just make sure it is a regular schedule your listeners can anticipate.
  • Videos – Nowadays, reels are all the hype. Try to do one 30-90 second reel once per week. Make an official and more professional video at least once a quarter. Remember, the more content you have to pull from, the better. 

4. Implement Your Marketing Plan

Now that you have a marketing plan, it’s time to implement it! Begin implementing your marketing strategies and tactics. Keep track of your results to see what is working and what isn’t. Adjust your marketing plan as needed to continue getting the best results for your business.

5. Evaluate Your Results

Finally, remember to evaluate your results regularly. Are you achieving your marketing goals? If not, why not? What can you do differently to improve your results? Regular evaluation will help you fine-tune your marketing efforts and ensure you get the most out of your marketing budget.
