Networking as an introvert can be exhausting. The idea alone might make you want to hide on your couch with a comfy blanket and snacks and pretend networking isn’t a thing.

Believe me, I’ve been there!

But here’s the secret – you don’t have to be the loudest or most outgoing person to create powerful connections. In fact, being authentic (and a little quieter) can be your greatest advantage.

In a recent episode of The Real Connect Podcast, I sat down with Audrey Kwan to unpack how introverts can approach networking naturally without anxiety or stress.

Why Networking Is Harder for Introverts

Unlike extroverts, who seem energized by meeting new people, introverts often feel drained and overstimulated after talking to plenty of people. Audrey shared similar experiences and emphasized why it’s okay, and even powerful, to embrace our introverted nature instead of forcing ourselves into uncomfortable situations.

Authentic Connections Over Small Talk

Surface-level small talk is not your jam if you’re anything like me. Audrey dropped gems about how introverts can skip past awkward chatter and head straight into meaningful conversations by asking thoughtful, purposeful questions. Because, let’s be honest, connections built on genuine dialogue last longer and feel better.

Leveraging Introvert Strengths at Networking Events

Audrey reminds us that introverts have unique strengths in networking settings. When we step into our ability to listen deeply and connect genuinely, you’re more inclined to create meaningful one-on-one interactions. She recommends focusing on fewer, deeper connections rather than draining yourself by trying to be everywhere. Trust me, quality over quantity always wins.

Finding People Who Align with You

One of the biggest hurdles for introverts is feeling out of place at events. Audrey stressed the importance of intentionally seeking out conversations with people who resonate with your values and goals. Consider being more intentional about who you want to meet.

Make a list of vendor tables you want to visit, people you want to talk to (many events have apps that display all signed up attendees), try joining the event group before hand to connect before you arrive to the event, and for me, I am clear about what outcomes I want, and make every effort to generate my desire, and every time, it happens.

Being clear is always a plus, and truly, when connections align naturally, you won’t feel drained. You’ll feel energized and inspired. These relationships are the ones that last and genuinely help you grow personally and professionally.

You Don’t Need to Fake Extroversion

Please show up fully as you! This means you don’t need to pretend to be an extrovert to succeed. Trying to be someone you’re not only creates stress but also makes networking uncomfortable and exhausting. Audrey and I discussed practical strategies to network authentically, such as setting boundaries for your energy, permitting yourself to step away when you need to recharge, and communicating honestly about who you are.

If you’re ready to embrace networking as your authentic self, this episode with Audrey James is a must-listen! We dive into real, relatable, and practical advice to help you master networking without sacrificing your peace of mind or energy.
